ACTIONABLE TIPS AND STRATEGIES TO HELP IMPROVE QUALITY OF LIFE

Since we just entered a new year, I thought discussing how to create real lasting change would be fitting. Today, I want to share with you ladies the growth journey I’ve been on with God for the last couple of years and how that’s completely transformed my mind, body, and spirit from the inside out.

Where are you at in your life right now? Are you moving in the right direction, or do you feel lost and a little confused? Assessing the current state of your life is a critical step to gain clarity and start improving your life. Doing a self-assessment of where you are requires you to be completely honest and vulnerable with yourself. Reflecting on parts of your life isn’t always pleasant. However, when you are completely honest about where you are, you can start taking steps to change your life. This article will discuss why a self-assessment is essential for progress and ten essential questions to ask when doing a self-assessment.

WHAT IS A SELF-ASSESSMENT?

According to Indeed, “self-assessments are a great way to analyze your work performance and any areas for growth” A self-assessment allows you to take stock of your current habits and routines. Assessing different areas of your life lets you see what is and isn’t working, so you can make improvements or adjustments.

WHY IS A SELF-ASSESSMENT IMPORTANT?

Do you ever feel like you’re working harder than many people but not moving forward? Are you overwhelmed and stressed by all the responsibilities you take on day after day? Do you find yourself being easily distracted or procrastinating way more than usual? A self-assessment will help you become aware of these problems and much more. Once you are aware of problems in your habits, routines, relationships, career, etc., that are derailing your progress, you can start taking action to fix them. If you never take the time to sit down and reflect on your life, you won’t know what needs to change or what needs improvement. When you are unaware, you’ll default to the same patterns, likely producing the same results.

In his book Atomic Habits, James Clear talks about the importance of reflection and review.

“REFLECTION AND REVIEW ENABLE THE LONG-TERM IMPROVEMENT OF ALL HABITS BECAUSE IT MAKES YOU AWARE OF YOUR MISTAKES AND HELPS YOU TO CONSIDER POSSIBLE PATHS FOR IMPROVEMENT. WITHOUT REFLECTION AND REVIEW, WE HAVE NO PROCESS FOR DETERMINING WHETHER WE ARE PERFORMING BETTER OR WORSE COMPARED TO YESTERDAY.”
BENEFITS OF A SELF-ASSESSMENT

A self-assessment is one of the first steps in improving any area of your life—everything from your career to your finances and relationships. A self-assessment raises your awareness so you can change or regularly pivot, leading to better results. Along with increased self-awareness, here are four other benefits of a self-assessment.

CLARITY

Life is full of distractions and noise. Taking the time to self-assess can lead to new insights about yourself and the world around you. When you regularly assess and reflect on your behavior, you gain more clarity about yourself, what’s important to you and what isn’t essential to you. When you have more clarity, you live a more aligned life with your values and purpose.

PROGRESS

A self-assessment promotes progress because reflecting on areas that need improvement urges you to improve those areas. Sometimes minor improvements can lead to the most significant changes. When constantly making improvements, you move faster and more efficiently towards your goals. Progress also creates momentum, and momentum is what keeps us going.

PRODUCTIVITY

Reflection is essential for healthy productivity. Productivity comes down to using your time wisely to get tasks done. A self-assessment can help you reevaluate how you utilize your time and ensure that you are making the most of it. We aren’t always aware of how much time we waste on distractions or unimportant tasks. However, when you regularly take stock of how you spend your time, you can make more time for what matters and say no to what doesn’t.

HAPPINESS

When you have clarity, are making progress and your days are productive, all of this leads to greater happiness. When we are happier, we show up better for ourselves and others.

TEN SELF-ASSESSMENT QUESTIONS
  • What is working for you?
  • What isn’t working for you?
  • Do my daily routines reflect the kind of person I want to become?
  • Which of my current habits or part of my routine is not serving me anymore?
  • What am I saying “yes” to that is not a good use of my time?
  • What areas of my life do I need to exercise more discipline?
  • Are the people I surround myself with energy drainers or energy chargers?
  • Is the media I consume daily consistent with the values and vision for my life?
  • What makes me alive and lights me up?
  • What makes me feel drained and burned out?
FINAL THOUGHTS

Regularly assessing your habits and routines is an essential part of making progress in any area of your life. Reflecting on the different areas of your life allows you to have increased awareness and make improvements. Constant never-ending improvement is how we become better versions of ourselves.
