“The tone of our morning has a powerful impact on the rest of our day” The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod. Having a morning routine in place is a great way to make sure you start and finish your day strong. Here are five tips for how to make the most out of your mornings.
PLAN
Planning for the following day the night before allows you to be more prepared to start the day ahead. When you don’t plan, it’s much harder to clarify what you need to do. When building a morning routine, or a habit in general, intentionally writing down what you plan to do increases the likelihood of following through. Plan out what you want to do the following day. What do you want to accomplish? What habits do you want to implement as part of your morning routine? What specific tasks or projects do you need to get done. Personally, when I don’t plan my mornings, the day usually gets away from me. Setting your intentions before bed allows for a smoother morning because you take the guesswork out of your priorities.
GET ENOUGH SLEEP
It’s no secret that a great morning begins with a good night’s sleep. Lack of rest can negatively affect many areas of our lives, especially our ability to function effectively. Everyone is different, so the right amount of rest varies from one person to another. However, making sure that you get enough rest every night is crucial to a successful morning routine. We can make all the plans we want, but executing our plans will be very difficult if our body is not well rested for the next day.
PREPARE YOUR MIND
Before starting the day, it’s essential to make sure that you are mentally prepared. Taking action to put our minds in a positive state first thing in the morning allows us to start the day off happier and more confident. Here are some simple practices you can do to put your mind in a positive space when you wake up.
- Gratitude – think about who or what you are grateful for
- Accomplishments – think about one thing that you accomplished the day before that made you feel good
- Meditate – sit in silence and breathe for a couple of minutes
- Read – read some inspirational words of wisdom. For instance, a book, a blog, the bible, a quote
- Listen – listen to uplifting music, a podcast, a motivational video, listen to anything that makes you feel excited and ready to take on the day.
Taking positive action to prepare our minds for the morning is essential to having a productive morning. Our mood influences our actions. Our minds must be in a suitable space to accomplish the tasks we set out for ourselves.
FOOD AND WATER
Just like our mind, taking care of the body is equally as important. Eating and staying hydrated in the morning allows you to function at your best. Eating healthy foods that give you energy and improves focus sets you up for a more productive and impactful day. Not eating can have the exact opposite effect. Prioritize taking care of your body. Hydrate with water as soon as possible in the morning and fuel your body with healthy food.
EXERCISE
Move your body. Exercising in the morning is a great habits to incorporate into your morning routine. When I exercise in the mornings, it positively impacts my mood, energy levels, and self-esteem. Overall, exercising is incredibly beneficial for the mind and body.
Additionally, if regularly exercising is difficult for you, prioritizing it in the morning ensures that you get it out of the way early. I’ve found that when I intentionally plan my exercise, I’m more likely to do it. When I write it down in my list of tasks for the following day and put the duration of time I want to work out, I’m more likely to exercise.
