“The quality of our lives often depends on the quality of our habits” – Atomic Habits by James Clear.
If we desire to live a good quality of life, developing good habits is essential. James Clear defines a habit as a behavior that has been repeated enough times to become automatic. Ultimately, improving ourselves and the world around us starts with the type of habits we perform daily. If you want to improve your life, focus on developing better habits. In the steps below, I will discuss how to develop good habits.
IDENTIFY YOUR CURRENT HABITS
Before you begin to develop better habits, it’s essential to become aware of your current habits. Take inventory of the actions you do every day. Identifying your current habits allows you to see where you are and what you need to change. Because habits are typically performed with little thought, we may not even be aware of some of them. To change or improve a behavior, being aware of your current patterns is an essential part of the process.
DECIDE WHAT TYPE OF PERSON YOU WANT TO BECOME
After you’ve identified your current habits, decide what type of person you want to become. This step is crucial in developing better habits. Clarifying the type of person you want to be will make it easier to identify what specific habits you need to develop. This step also allows you to get clear on your motivations, beliefs, and values. Behavior change is difficult. Understanding your motivations behind why you want to change will keep you moving forward when you feel like quitting. Identifying and acknowledging your current beliefs about a particular habit you are trying to change can help put you in the right mindset for change and steady progress. Lastly, knowing your values help to keep you on the right track to ensure that you are developing habits aligned with who you are.
IDENTIFY WHICH HABITS SERVE YOU AND WHICH ONES DON’T
Now, identify the habits that support the person you want to be and the habits that don’t. Answer the following questions. What current habits of mine are not serving the type of person I want to become? Which of my current habits support the type of person I want to become? What other habits do I need to start doing that align with my desired identity? Start doing more of the habits that support your desired identity and less of those that don’t. Take action on one habit that you want to cultivate and remain consistent with taking action
DEDICATE TIME TO DEVELOP GOOD HABITS
Developing good habits takes time, patience, and consistency. It also requires deliberate practice. The only way to become good at something to the point where it feels effortless is by doing it repeatedly. Make time to practice good habits. Start by focusing on one habit at a time and dedicating time to practice the habit every day. I’ve done this in the past when I wanted to develop a more consistent reading habit, journaling habit, and exercise habit. As James Clear writes in Atomic Habits, “every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become.”
FINAL THOUGHTS
Our habits make us who we are. If we want to live happier, healthier, more fulfilling lives, developing good habits is critical. The process of developing a habit is ongoing. Slipping back into bad habits is easy to do. Therefore, it’s essential to regularly be aware of your current habits and question whether they still serve you. Regularly taking stock of your habits allows you to be more aware of changes and improvements you can make that could enhance the quality of your life.
