Since I started my journey of personal growth and development, there have been several lessons I have learned that have had a lasting impact on my life. Many of these lessons are what I wish I had known years earlier. Nonetheless, I have learned and grown from them a great deal. I will share ten lessons I’ve learned on my growth journey. I hope you find these lessons as valuable as I have as you go along your own growth journey
REGULARLY ASK YOURSELF QUESTIONS
Get in the habit of asking yourself good questions. Questions allow you to clarify where you are and want to go. Many people who go through life never master the habit of asking themselves good questions. While you ask yourself questions, ensure you are answering them. Routinely reflect on your life and what you want out of it. Ask and answer questions about what you want out of life, your goals and dreams for the future, and your values and beliefs.
Regularly seeking clarity will allow you to live a happier and more fulfilling life. Without clarity and direction, life can get stressful and overwhelming. When I graduated, I didn’t take the time to seek clarity on what I wanted out of life, and that caused me to have an identity crisis years later. So get into the habit of questioning yourself regularly.
CHALLENGE YOUR BELIEFS
Continuously recognize and challenge the limiting beliefs holding you back or no longer serving the person you want to become. Not every belief you have ever been told will hold for the rest of your life. We are humans and grow, so our beliefs are also ever-evolving. What are some limiting or old beliefs that you are holding on to that no longer serve you? It’s essential to know how to identify these beliefs and overcome them. Overcoming your limiting beliefs is the only way to unleash your full potential and become the person you were meant to be.
TAKE OWNERSHIP
Learn to take responsibility for the events that happen in your life. Don’t blame others. When you learn to take responsibility, it can be empowering. Life is not always going to go the way we planned. When life doesn’t go as planned, we should accept it, recognize it, and feel empowered to find solutions. Blaming others is easy, but taking responsibility and ownership that’s where real growth happens.
FOCUS ON WHAT YOU CAN CONTROL
We can’t control everything that happens to us, but what we can control are our actions and our response. Focusing on what we can control will lead to happier, healthier lives. Focusing on the present makes us less likely to stress about the past or future. Focusing on what I can control is still something I struggle with now and then; we all do. It’s not always easy to trust and just let life happen. However, when we get into the habit of being grateful for the moment, our lives are happier and more fulfilling.
LEARN TO SAY NO
If you want to create a life you love to live, one of the most critical habits you will have to develop is the habit of saying no. You must learn to prioritize and say no to the people or activities that don’t serve you or your bigger future. Learning to say no will allow you to focus on your goals and dreams. If you are busy saying yes to everyone else’s priorities, you will find it hard to have time to focus on your priorities. Get into the habit of saying no to what doesn’t serve you and yes to what does.
PUSH YOURSELF TO TAKE ACTION
Life is unpredictable and uncertain, it’s not always easy to make decisions, but decisions are what shape our lives. Learn to get into the habit of taking action. Don’t wait until the perfect time because there is no such thing as the perfect time. Many times the perfect time is right here and right now. Tony Robbins says, “whenever you are in a state where you want something while you are in that state, do something that will commit you to follow through.” Take action when you learn something new, or a great idea comes to mind. Taking action is how breakthroughs happen.
REMEMBER YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Sometimes we get so focused on what we haven’t been able to do that we forget to remember what we’ve already accomplished. It’s essential to take time to remember and celebrate our accomplishments because that can help give us the fuel to move forward.
DON’T LET IMPOSTER SYNDROME STOP YOU
If you don’t start, you’ll never improve. It’s easy to feel like a fraud when you are starting something new that you have never done before. But we only grow if we push ourselves out of our comfort zone. With time and repeated practice, you will get better. Everyone has felt like an imposter at some point when trying to do something new, but those who succeed are the ones that don’t quit and keep going.
FIND A WAY TO ADD VALUE
Tony Robbins once said, “if you add more value, then you live your life as a giver, not a taker.” Find a way to give and be creative. Some of the most successful people in the world are successful because they find a way to add value to people’s lives. They give back in massive ways, and as a result, they get rewarded significantly. Find something you love to do and use that to impact the world around you.
FIND YOUR WHY
What drives you to take action? Find the deeper meaning behind what makes you take action. One common attribute of successful people is that they know their why. They know why they do what they do and live by it. Having a strong why is what is going to help push you when the going gets tough. For more on how to find your why, check out this article
